Where Do We Put a Baby?

Hi friends! As you know I’m preggo with our first baby (!!) arriving this July :)

Not going to lie, I’m kind of starting to panic a little bit thinking of all the stuff we need and where we are going to put it all. We are living in a 2-bedroom home right now in Monterey, which we love! I really don’t want to give up the guest room because we are going to be having so many guests when the baby arrives, visitors in Monterey, for Christmas, and then will be moving again come the end of the year/next January. Soooo yeah we need to find places in our current house for the baby, which I’m trying to tell myself won’t be too hard since it will just be from 0-6 months until we move to a new house.

With all this new stuff, I realized some parts of the house and our current set-up just isn’t going to work.. our sofa situation for example. As much as I love the blue velvet sofa (Home Reveal Here) it just is NOT comfortable at all and I miss our L-couch situation and how amazing they are. I should have listened to Ryan, but insisted on getting this beautiful (but terribly uncomfortable) velvet sofa. Don’t tell him I said that.

So I’m starting now to rearrange places and utilize the space we do have a little bit better in the house. Let’s call it a little Spring Cleaning, shall we? I was introduced to a cool new website, called Reel. The basic idea of the website is that you can find what you are looking for - anything from designer items to crate and barrel wine glasses - and start a “reel” where you pay a certain amount of money each day to save up for the item, aka you never have to charge a purchase to a credit card and go into debt. I love this idea because I’ve always been taught to not buy what you can’t afford and these days, credit cards make it very easy to do just that. With Reel, you can find the item you are looking to purchase, choose how many days and how much you want to pay each day to work towards owning the item. This is also a great opportunity to add in a little motivation for all those long days working.

Your “reels” may look something like this:

Honestly this idea was brilliant to help people stay out of debt and work towards something they are wanting. More FAQ about Reel can be found here.

As far as finding a new couch.. who knew it would be so hard?? Our room is kind of an awkward size, so finding a good sectional is not easy. Then add in the color scheme, dog-friendly and baby-friendly capabilities, and trying to spend less than it costs for a car. At least we have a little bit of time to try and find the perfect fit until baby comes I suppose. I can just picture it now all snuggled up in the corner of the sectional holding him while he naps :)

Thank you to Reel for sponsoring this post.

Old Wives’ Tales on Predicting your Baby’s Gender

& How Correct Ours Were

Before we found out the gender of our baby, we were looking up all the tales and signs out there to make a prediction or give us any information, I was SO impatient and wanted to know asap. Those of you mamas who wait until birth…. amazing control! I don’t think I could ever!

From the very beginning, I thought our baby was a boy. I had this weird dream around 6 weeks, kind of like when you’re falling and you suddenly jerk awake, I was awoken by something screaming “BOY BOY BOY BOY” in my head haha writing it out it sounds super creepy. It definitely made me believe it was a boy from the very beginning, how could I not right?! We also had tons of little clues from life that all gave us “boy” results lol for example: pulling a wishbone apart boy vs. girl for each side, asking Franklin to shake our hand.. boy or girl (btw he predicted the presidency, where we would end up on our next tour, and now the baby’s gender all correctly) and receiving blue roses with a flower company collaboration, when they offer tons of different colors.

1. Sweet vs. Salty

Wives’ Tale: If you find yourself craving all things sweet, that’s a sign you’re having a girl. Cravings for salty or even protein-rich foods mean it might be a boy.

Baby Dishman: My cravings are definitely savory. Before getting pregnant, I would always have sweet breakfasts like chocolate protein oatmeal or peanut butter, banana, and honey toast. With this baby, all I want are bagels with cream cheese or avocado toast and eggs.

Verdict: BOY

2. Morning Sickness

Wives’ Tale: If you're suffering from excessive nausea and morning sickness, it’s said you could be having a girl.

Baby D: I never threw up once throughout the first trimester, aka when morning sickness is supposedly most prevalent. I did feel nauseous in the morning if I didn’t have breakfast right away and take my prenantal vitamin with orange juice, kind of like a hangover. Definitely thankful because I’ve heard horror stories of morning sickness.

Verdict: BOY

3. Pregnancy Glow

Wives’ Tale: If your complexion is bright and your hair is shiny, you could be having a boy. If you’re breaking out and skin is dry, it may just mean you’ve got a girl growing. It’s said that “little girls steal Mom’s beauty.”

Baby D: I don’t know about the whole “pregnancy glow” thing, but I never had major break outs. I started lathering my body (and belly) in lotion and oils from the very beginning in hopes of helping to decrease stretch marks.

Verdict: BOY?

4. Partner’s Weight Gain

Wives’ Tale: if your partner is gaining weight alongside you, that could be a sign that you’re carrying a girl.

Baby D: Lol this one makes no sense to me. Does that mean your partner gets more lazy?? Ryan is definitely the opposite and is out and about doing something active everyday. He was on board with getting back on track after the holidays - minus the random cravings every now and then ;)

Verdict: BOY

5. Moody or Mellow

Wives’ Tale: If you’re feeling more moody than mellow, you might be having a girl. If you’re more chilled out, legend has it you should get ready for a boy.

Baby D: Hmmm this one was definitely on a day-to-day basis for me. I would be very calm one day with the mindset “whatever happen will happen” and freaking out and crying for NO reason the next day. I would say overall, not chill.

Verdict: mostly GIRL

6. Carrying High vs. Low

Wives’ Tale: Carrying high means you’re having a girl, while carrying low means it’s a boy.

Baby D: We found out the gender at 11 weeks, so I wasn’t showing at all. The evening bloat was definitely real and I got so excited and would push my belly out at night after dinner haha. Also, don’t really know where “low” or “high” would mean so ??

Verdict: Inconclusive

7. Baby’s Heart Rate

Wives’ Tale: During your ultrasound, pay attention to baby’s heart rate. If that little ticker is beating faster than 140 beats per minute, get ready for a girl. If it’s lower, this signals a boy.

Baby D: The first time we saw the baby and listen to the heart rate was around 8 weeks, and we were so amazed there was really something in there and the heart was really pumping we didn’t pay attention to the pace of the heart rate! It is an indescribable feeling watching another little heartbeat pumping inside your belly.

Verdict: Inconclusive

8. Chinese Gender Chart

Wives’ Tale: Match the age you were when you conceived and the month of baby’s conception to see what the Chinese calendar reveals. You can find a Chinese gender predictor here.

Baby D: Age 26 and November conception leaves us with predicting a girl!

Verdict: GIRL

9. Headaches

Wives’ Tale: Extreme headaches while pregnant are said to mean you are carrying a baby boy. No real headaches? Girl.

Baby D: I’ve hardly had any headaches my entire life (thank you lord) but after becoming pregnant, I had a few in the afternoons and they were no joke. Nothing serious and they went away in a few minutes, but man headaches are not fun.

Verdict: BOY

10. Ramzi Theory

Theory: Depending on where the placenta is growing in your uterus (from 6-8 weeks), it will tell you if it’s a boy or girl. If your placenta is on the right side of your uterus, it’s a boy. Left side, girl. More information explaining the theory can be found here.

Baby D: This is superrrrr confusing to me so Ryan spearheaded this research and concluded my placenta was on the right of my uterus, therefore a boy.

Verdict: BOY

Wives’ Tale final Count:

Boy: 6 | Girl: 2 | Inconclusive: 2

We are so blessed to welcome our healthy Baby BOY in July!!

Keep in mind this is all fun and games, but you have a 50/50 chance on being correct haha!

Telling Our Family + First Trimester

It’s Official:

Okay, so you already read how we found out about our lil babe the day before Thanksgiving and seeing our entire family..! (post HERE)

So now we get home and I had scheduled the blood test for the next day. Pretty easy - you go in whenever you want, they draw a little bit of blood and then you are on your way, thinking about nothing else the rest of the day until they call with the results.

I went in to get the test before work and they said they would call me by lunchtime that day. 12….1…..2 pm rolls around and I still haven’t heard back, so I call them and ask for the results.

I am out of my office taking a walk and have to sit down. I immediately call Ryan and tell him he's the father.. haha just kidding, not really. And we say okay here we go!

We set our first appointment that week and went in to get all our information, sign up for a baby info class, and get our due date!

July 30, 2019

And just like that, I am in love.

Telling our Family:

We kept our little secret from our family until Christmas Eve. Ryan’s family traveled to Tanzania, Africa to see his youngest sister who is serving there in the peace corps (!!) and were 12 hours ahead of us. My parents came to stay with us for the week! I ordered custom onesies on Etsy and wrapped them up really small, sent one to Ryan’s mom to pack in her suitcase and open on Christmas, and kept one for my parents.

We went out to dinner on Christmas Eve to Roy’s, kind of a tradition with my parents and one of their favorite restaurants. When my dad was asking about what everyone wanted to drink and if we wanted a bottle of wine, I broke out the little gift and handed it to them to open. They thought it was a gift card for the restaurant LOL. I was shaking and SO nervous for some reason ?? They opened it and immediately started smiling and crying and hugging :) The waiter even added a little touch to my mom’s favorite dessert, the chocolate lava cake ♡

We got home from dinner, with our cheeks hurting from smiling so much, and got ready to FaceTime Ryan’s family in Africa! It was our Christmas Eve night, and their Christmas morning (because of the 12 hour time difference), so it worked out perfectly! Again, I was so nervous when they opened my double-layer-very-well-taped wrapping lol why?? They found the onesie and note we wrote for them since we couldn’t be there in person.. More laughing, crying, and smiling ♡

I secretly videotaped their reactions and you can watch them here :)

We called our grandparents and family on Christmas Day to share the news. It was such a weight off of our shoulders to tell our everyone. Phase I at least. (Phase II friends. Phase III social media) haha this is how I imagined it.

Everything First Trimester:

H O W A R E Y O U F E E L I N G ?

Aside from the extremely sore tits and heightened sense of smell, I didn’t feel any different. A little more tired, but honestly I’m always tired let’s be real. Some days I would feel a little nauseous (kind of like a hangover) but I never had morning sickness, and that would go away after I took my prenatal vitamin and had breakfast. OJ every single morning for the win. Towards the end of the first trimester I started feeling a lot better and getting my energy back, and it made me realize how nauseous and tired I really was in the beginning.

C R A V I N G S ?

  • Avocado toast + eggs

  • Scrambled egg sandwich + mustard

  • Everything bagel + cream cheese

  • BBQ chicken + mac and cheese

  • Broccoli + ranch dressing

  • Diner butter lettuce salad + ranch dressing

  • Anything + ranch dressing

Honestly I thought “cravings” would be me crazy yelling at Ryan telling him to go find me peanut butter and pickle ice cream at 3 am, but it’s nothing like that (if you aren’t surprised). It is more of the feeling that nothing else sounds good to eat except that particular thing, aka salad with ranch dressing for me. Some days I would come home from work looking for a snack and eat a whole head of broccoli with ranch dressing - that’s all I wanted. Ryan has been such a trooper though when I throw out random food requests for dinner and going to pick up ingredients at the grocery store for bbq chicken and mac and cheese for the 4th night in a row :) love you babe.

In the beginning, I was trying to eat more frequently and just more in general because I was actually losing weight. Probably from not working out as much and cutting back on the weightlifting, bye for now little muscles. My starting weight was 138 and I am 5’10”. I used to eat protein oatmeal or PB & banana toast for breakfast every morning, but now all I want is savory for breakfast so it’s usually scrambled eggs and a bagel. There were moments when I was SO hungry and feel like I could eat everything, and then take two bites and be sick to my stomach thinking about eating more. The food aversions were real for the first trimester.

D R I N K I N G ?

I had given up caffeine earlier in the year, not even thinking about getting pregnant, so that was an easy transition to not drinking any. I drink a ton of water throughout the day and orange juice in the morning. It’s way easier to not drink alcohol than I thought. We went on a New Year’s Ski trip in Tahoe with 7 other couples and I honestly didn’t miss drinking and still had a ton of fun with everyone. Not going to lie though, I am very much looking forward to that first ice cold margarita after this little guy vacates :D

F A V O R I T E P R O D U C T S ?

I luckily started taking a prenantal vitamin a few months before getting pregnant under doctor’s advice if we were going to start trying in the near future - which we were, but we didn’t realize it was that near lol. I take one religiously every day thanks to a cute little pill box! An easy reminder for the day to take the vitamin and stay on track. I have been lathering myself in lotion and oil, especially my upper legs and belly, every night to try to combat some of the stretch marks. All products linked below! Thanks so much for riding along on this journey with us :)

I cannot wait to share anything and everything with you! As always, if you have questions or requests - don’t hesitate to comment or reach out ;)
